One of the many specialties at FW Warehousing is cold storage, but FW does not stop there, FW will do whatever it takes to solve a businesses problem.
A prime example of the FW Warehousing problem-solving capabilities in the realm of cold storage involved a major brewing company, in this case, Anheuser Busch (now AB/InBev) and a perishable good that is a key ingredient in the brewing of beer – hops.
Hops are the female flower clusters or seed cones of the hop plant. Hops are used as a flavoring and preservative in beer. Hops give beer a bitter, tangy taste, as well as provide a natural antibiotic effect that promotes the activity of brewer’s yeast used in beer’s fermentation process, while inhibiting less desirable microorganisms which can cause beer to spoil.
Anheuser Busch was storing a three year supply of hops in multiple facilities. One of these facilities was a rented facility that did not meet Anheuser Busch’s requirements in that it had floor drains and a sprinkler system. AB was concerned that potential problems with these two systems – systems that could not economically be removed from the rental facility – could damage or destroy a significant amount of its overall hops supply by degrading their quality or making them totally unusable.
Anheuser Busch approached FW Warehousing for a solution for its hops storage. In response, FW built a custom freezer at one of the facilities specifically for hops storage for Anheuser Busch. This freezer did not include floor drains or a sprinkler system. To maintain the optimal freshness of the hops, the custom freezer FW built was designed to meet AB’s strict parameters for temperature and humidity control. The freezer keeps the hops stored within at a constant 18-26 degrees Fahrenheit at a 70% relative humidity. The project to design and build this custom freezer for hops storage was completed within six months, start to finish.
