Business Situation: A major paint supplier provides custom matched paints for industrial and retail customers. The custom paint needs to be mixed by a specialized computer that determines the approximate combination of colors needed to achieve the desired result. To do this, the computer operator must be properly trained and know how to calibrate the machine. Custom tailoring each paint based on customers’ needs required access to the retailer’s full catalog of colors.
FW Solution: After a quick study of the problem by the FW Solutions team, a fix was agreed upon that saved the client both time and money. Originally the client was sending out paints to another location where the custom mixes took place adding time and costs. But because the client already used FW Warehousing as their distribution center, multiple steps could be eliminated by mixing the paint at the warehouse. The FW solutions team carved out a space in their warehouse where the necessary mixing equipment could be set up and operated safely. A new ventilation system was added to the warehouse as well as the means to properly dispose of used paint cans. A talented reliable employee was trained on the computer and given the necessary tools to successfully mix the paint. Now the custom mixed paints could be shipped from the same distribution center as the standard colors saving the client both time and money.
Benefits: By mixing the paints at the distribution center, the customer was able to eliminate multiple steps in their supply chain. The results allowed customers to receive their paint faster. FW Warehousing had the opportunity to show case some of its skilled employees. The successful move to the distribution center built confidence in our customer by demonstrating our ability to solve problems. Finally, the retailer saved time and money by consolidating all their logistics operations in the distribution center.
