Forklift tipping accidents are confirmed as one of the biggest causes of fatal accidents in general warehousing. In almost all of these cases, the driver was ‘mousetrapped’ between the overhead guard and the ground, causing massive trauma to the head or upper body. The sad part is that many of the injuries and deaths could have been prevented. There are a few things that can be done to prevent these accidents from happening in general warehousing operations.
First of all, put the seat belt on. Seat belts in cars are designed to keep the driver and passenger from hitting the steering wheel or window during a collision. In general warehousing forklift seat belts are a safety feature designed to keep an operator from his natural instincts to jump out of the machine when a turnover is occurring. Forklift seat belts are designed to keep the driver from sliding out of the seat during turnover. Human nature is such that despite all the training and facts, experienced operator’s find it irresistible to jump from a forklift when turnover is eminent. The facts are that by jumping out, the operator is more likely to be injured.
If one does find in a forklift turning over without the seat belt on, there are a couple of things to remember that will improve the chances of survival without injury. Stay in the forklift. Lean away from the direction of the tipping. Grip the steering wheel or grab the handles. Finally push down with your feet to force yourself back in the seat. It is still better to remain in the seat even if you have failed to put on the seat belt. It’s better to belt up than get smashed up.
